Meaning Of Volga

 VOLGA is a Russian River which is also Europe's longest River.It flows through central Russia to southern Russia and into the Caspian sea.it has a length of 3,531km and a catchment area of 1,360,000km².it is the national river of Russia.


Historically,it was an important meeting place of the Eurasian civilization. it flows in Russia through forests.Moscow and other nine largest cities of Russia are located in the volga's drainage.The largest reservoirs in the world are located along the volga.

The symbolic meaning in Russia culture is referred to as Bonra-matywka which is volga-matushka meaning mother-volga in Russian literature and folklore.

According to different sources,the region was mainly inhabited by Slavic, Turkic and Viking people. Povolzhye played an important part of Rus'khaganate. The Volga river was mainly used by the traders from the oriented and Viking world.


The region is home to a large portion of Russia's population, with the major cities of yaroslavl, kostroma, Novogrod, Cheboksary, kazan,ulyanovsk,toyaltti, samara,saratov,volgograd and astrakhan all located directly on the Volga River. Other major cities on tributaries of the Volga include Ryazan,Dzerzhinsk,Kaluka and Oryol on the Oka River, Penza on the Sura River, Perm and Naberezhnye Chelny on the Kama River, Yoshkar-Ola on the Malaya Kokshaga River, and Dimitrovgrod on the Bolshoy Cheremshan River.

Major cities located on tributaries of the Volga's tributaries include Moscow, the largest city and capital of Russia, on the Moskva River, a tributary of the Oka River. Kirov is located on the Vyatka River and UFA, Sterlitamak and Salavat are located on the Belaya River, both tributaries of the Kama River.

Following the sit-at-home ordered by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate the 54th anniversary of the declaration of the Sovereign State of Biafra, South East Governors’ Forum Chairman, Dave Umahi, has said May 30 would be set aside as a day to remember millions of Igbo that lost their lives during the civil war. Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State, who stated this during a television interview, yesterday, said there was the need to set aside a date to honour the Igbo who died during the three-year war, insisting there was nothing wrong with it. He said if a proposal to do so comes before the South East governors, they would give it consideration.
